Griffin not playing for Redskins

CLEVELAND (AP) — Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III will not play against the Browns.

Griffin, who sprained his right knee last week against Baltimore, is inactive for Sunday's game. Rookie Kirk Cousins will make his first career start and veteran Rex Grossman will be his backup. Grossman has been inactive for every other game this season.

The Redskins announced that Griffin would not start late Saturday night, ending days of speculation about whether the dynamic QB would play after taking a scary hit in the closing minutes of regulation against the Ravens.

Griffin sustained a mild sprain of the lateral collateral ligament. He was limited in practice all week, but as of Friday it appeared he might play.

Cousins came off the bench last week when Griffin got hurt and threw a late touchdown pass and ran for a 2-point conversion.
